An agent took a call several years ago and was informed a valuable Halloween scarecrow had been stolen from an insured’s front yard. A portion of the conversation went like this:
Insured: “Because of its high value, we immediately reported the theft to the police.”
Agent: “Wow. What was the scarecrow worth?”
Insured: “It was dressed in brand new orange overalls we bought several years ago.”
Agent: “So what were the overalls worth?”
Insured: “Like, they were still brand new.”
Agent: “And their cost new was what?”
Insured: “My husband was still going to wear them, really he was.”
Agent: “Fine, but what …”
Insured: “… oh … they cost about seven dollars.”
Insurance coverage: Homeowner’s Form 2. Claim covered? Yes, subject to a $100 deductible. Our claim? Yes.
